ANY PROFESSION THAT WILL NOT ALLOW THE YOUNGER ONES TO GROW WILL NOT PROGRESS. Professor B. L. Ajibade

Professor Ajibade B. L. had an exclusive interview with a blogger where he emphatically identified several challenges rocking nursing profession in Nigeria.  He stated categorically that any profession that does not allow its younger ones to grow will not progress. He's an erudite scholar with verse experiences in clinical and academia. Below is an excerpt of the interview:

Itzaboutnurses: Good Afternoon Sir,Congratulation on your recent feat as a Professor In Nursing,Can we meet you Sir?

Professor Ajibade Lawal: I'm Ajibade Bayo Lawal. A native of Ejigbo in Ejigbo Local Government Area, Osun state. Born to the family of late Alfa and Alhaja Ajibade Lawal,Arikedara's Compound. First born in the family of 4. 3 men and a lady. I'm married to Hajia Ajibade Lawal Ayoni Omoyeni  (nee Oyolola ).

Professor Ajibade Lawal: Thanks so much much for Congratulating me and for giving me the opportunity to talk with you

itzaboutnurses: Thanks Sir,in recent times,Professors have come to emerge in Nursing profession in Nigeria, with the likes of Prof Tijani of Lautech,Prof Prisca Adeyemo of UI,do you think the time has come for the emergence of professors or it is just a coincidence?

Professor Ajibade Lawal: It's not a coincidence, many of them are over due. But a point of correction, the Professorial seat for Professor Tijani is from BUK,Kano. The  Nursing Profession has come of age but the University education was not well structured at that time. Getting people to assess your work for elevation has been difficult, and don't forget the scrambling for the Professional recognition and autonomy.

Itzaboutnurses: Thanks for the correction sir, that makes you the only professor of Nursing from Lautech and the latest professor of Nursing in Nigeria?

Professor Ajibade Lawal: My Professional seat is equally not from Lautech but Achievers University owo,Ondo state

itzaboutnurses: okay Sir

Professor Ajibade Lawal: You are welcome

Itzaboutnurses: On what specialty is your professorial  seat attained on Sir?

Professor AjibadeLawal: I'm in Mental health Unit

Professor Ajibade Lawal: My PhD was clinical Psychology while my Fellowship was in Mental health/Psychiatric Nursing

Itaboutnurses: Wow,do you foresee more Professors in this field as time goes on?

Professor Ajibade Lawal: Atleast I'm sure of that in Lautech, UI and OAU even Babcock. The sky will be our beginning Insha Allah

Itzaboutnurses: Amen Sir,in your own view, who should be blamed for the rubbished image of Nursing in Nigeria,is it the Federal government or the Nursing and Midwifery council?

Professor Ajibade Lawal: I will blame nurses especially those of us in both clinical and academia. "Any profession that will not allow the younger ones to grow will not progress". Egoism is common in nursing practice. NANNM needs to be vibrant as a pressure group and there must be a serious synergy between NANNM AND NMCN. We must be ready to tolerate each other

Itzaboutnurses: Sir,are you suggesting that older ones in Nursing are impending the older ones, how?

Professor Ajibade Lawal: Yes. Even academia some of us believe that the way we were treated in the university so also the new entrants should be treated, forgetting this an internet age. Some of my colleagues in the clinical area forget about their own profession and are not assertive on issues bordering on relationships between medics and nurses. I have witnessed a case while following up my students for clinical practice,a consultant entered the ward with his medical students, the consultant without a good morning said "matron we are ready for the ward round". The matron spontaneously started castigating the junior nurses and nursing students for not standing up when the consultant entered. I said matron "I'm disappointed in you ". She said no Doctor,"they have been taught  Nonsense ". The following year, She came for part time Nursing Degree and I said you have come to take part in the Nonsense. With her action, she has put her profession at the mercy of the consultant. This will discourage the younger ones. At least the medical students and nursing students entered the university with the same number of credits in WASSCE

Itzaboutnurses: Hmmmm, very deep Sir,What area do you hope to contribute to the development of Nursing in Nigeria?

Professor Ajibade Lawal: Well I want to leave nursing better than the way I met through my write-up,action and deeds

Itzaboutnurses: Hmmmm,Do you think Nursing Nigeria can achieve autonomy?

Professor Ajibade Lawal: For now nursing in Nigeria is autonomous to certain degree. We are getting there gradually in the achievement of total autonomy. It's only we are moving at the snail speed

Itzaboutnurses:Thank you Sir,what piece of advice do you have for junior ones in this Profession?

Professor Ajibade Lawal: Nobody has asked them to choose the Profession but through their own free will. Therefore,it must be pursued with good intent and higher academic qualifications. They must be assertive but in doing that, they must always support their actions with evidence

Itzaboutnurses: Thank you Professor,we are really grateful for granting this online On behalf of Itzaboutnurses,we say Thank You Sir and Wish you a Safe Journey to your Destination.

Professor Ajibade Lawal: Thanks so much for according me the privilege of talking with you. It's my prayer that the aspirations of your programme will not be in futility. I'm appreciative of the opportunity. Remain blessed
