#NEWSUPDATE: DR Congo is tackling a new Ebola outbreak with an experimental vaccine

Image
In its battle to stop the spread of the Ebola after a recent outbreak, a new WHO-backed vaccine is the Democratic Republic of Congo’s weapon of choice. On May 12, the World Health Organization  declared an Ebola outbreak  in DR Congo after it confirmed three deaths. At the time, the United Nations health agency said there was no cause for panic. Now, with as many as 52 suspected cases, DR Congo’s health ministry is stepping up its response and  has approved  the use of a new experimental vaccine to stop the outbreak. In published findings from tests of the vaccine, rVSV-ZEBOV, it showed a  100% protection rate . During trials conducted in Guinea, thousands of people tested were all confirmed as  virus-free within 10 days . While WHO said at the time that the vaccine will not be available for mass use until 2018, pharmaceutical giants Merck, backed by GAVI, a global vaccine alliance, made 300,000 doses of the vaccine available in the event of an outbreak. That foresight could

WHITE UNIFORM LOST GLORY AND DIGNITY, CAN IT EVER BE REGAINED? BY NURSE OLATUNJI CATHERINE

WHITE UNIFORM  LOST  GLORY AND DIGNITY, CAN IT EVER BE REGAINED? Nurses, what can we do about this our fallen and already rubbished white uniform.  It is no longer news that a lot of riff-raff wears this uniform and nothing is done about it. I was in BUTH last year for my tooth extraction, saw some students in white uniform some were well dressed while some were so dirty and looking rough. Their mannerism and way of interaction with the dentists made me curious whether they were really nurses.  I decided to engage one young and pretty one, she told me her name, I asked her which school,  she told me Ogun State School of health, Ilese.  I knew immediate they couldn't be nurses, probed further and she said they are "dental health technicians (DHT)" , I  asked her why  are they putting on a nurse uniform and she said "because we assist the doctors, and since nurses are doctors assistant we are also nurses"   I was perplexed. The fact that it was so evident

NEWS : UGONSA CHARGES NMCN GOVERNING COUNCIL ON EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE

Image
The Chairman and entire members, Governing Council/Boards of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) Madams/Sirs, The evaluation of the caliber of progressive personalities that make up the recently constituted Governing Council/Boards of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) left us in such blissful awe that we tagged it – a welcome development. The task ahead is monumental and expectations are very high of you. A team of 21 members with up to 10 Ph.D holders is expected to perform far above the pass mark. The problem of nursing in Nigeria has never been deficiency of laudable ideas but seeming absence of commitment as well as dearth of altruistic sacrifices to fire the ideas into reality. Because of our apparent latch onto mediocrity, we have abstractly ceded our core duties to the CHEWS in the Primary Health Centres and have been pushed away from our classic duties – such as IV therapy, Catheterization, Passage of NG-tube, antenatal examination and co

The best thing to eat before and after you exercise, according to the physiologist behind the viral 7-minute workout

Image
GETTING READY TO work out is often the hardest part of exercising. You need a plan, a place to do it, the right kind of clothes, good shoes, and enough energy. Caffeine can help you feel more energetic — but so can certain foods. Chris Jordan is the  exercise physiologist who came up with the 7-minute workout  routine designed to give you the benefits of a sweaty bike ride and a trip to the gym in just a few minutes. He says it’s important to fuel your body properly before working out. To avoid feeling burned out a few minutes into your routine or exhausted afterward, Jordan recommends two specific kinds of snacks. SOURCE : The42
