Mental Health Nurse raised alarm on high rate of substance abuse in Nigeria.

Image
High Rate of Substance Abuse detrimental and disastrous to the future of Nigeria.  - Adekunle Akinola Bunmi There is a serious problem building up in our society and no one seems to be taking it serious. We have a situation where it is easier and cheaper to procure cannabis, cigarettes and other psychoactive substances than to access and afford the basic psychotropic drugs. Now for the sake of clarity and those who are not health professionals, psychoactive substances cause psychosis and other Mental, Neurologic and Substance abuse {MNS} disorders while psychotropic medications play a significant role in their treatment. To worsen the matter, the cost of enrolling people who are addicted to substances into drug rehabilitation programs is making it look like it is a luxury. Also saddening is that law enforcement agents and agencies that are supposed to tackle the proliferation of availability of these{mostly} illegal substances have become partners in consumption and distribution wit

3 MYTHS ABOUT ONCOLOGY NURSING - Misti DeMargel Clinical Nurse

Image
3 myths about oncology nurses In 1998, I became a labor and delivery nurse and loved it. I loved seeing the joy on new parents’ faces and holding the newborns. But after one of my colleagues left labor and delivery to work at   MD Anderson , I decided to follow her lead. Though I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy working with cancer patients as much as I enjoyed working with new parents and babies, I soon took a job at   MD Anderson’s   Texas Medical Center Campus.  Well, 18 years and two cross-country moves later, I am still an oncology nurse – now at   MD Anderson  in The Woodlands   – and I can’t imagine working in any other field. Yet I still hear many of the same myths and misconceptions about oncology nurses that I had back before I came to   MD Anderson .  Here are a few of them. Myth: Your oncology nurse won’t be able to answer your questions. Truth: We get calls from patients who believe their doctor is the only person who can answer their questions. But we oncology nurs

Maternal and Child Health Dilemma: Another Time Bomb in the Waiting! PART 1 by NurseJosiah Okesola-Jackson

Image
Two Sad Tales Out of Many About 7 years ago, I had a first hand experience of what a maternal and child health tragedy feels like . But for divine intervention (we lost the baby), I would have been a widower by now. Last week, a secondary school friend of mine lost his wife and baby during childbirth. It's the most shocking news of the year for me! I am not sure of how long it will take my friend, I and our other colleagues still in mourning phase, to recover from this tragedy. Statistical report provided by the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund, UNICEF reveals that “every single day, Nigeria loses about 2,300 under-five year olds and 145 women of childbearing age. This makes the country the second largest contributor to the under–five and maternal mortality rate in the world." Another recent UNICEF report states that “for every 10 minutes, one woman dies on account of pregnancy or childbirth in Nigeria. This is inarguably a shocking reality! Underneath this st

Nurse Alabi Oyefunke exhaled Nigerian Nurses as most dedicated healthcare provider.

Am a  nurse, a proud registered nurse. On this friday i wish to share some words with my professional colleagues, its a huge task and a brave descision to choose to be a nurse and to stay in the profession especially in NIGERIA. The salary is  not encouraging, the working conditions are bad, the working enviroment is not stimulating. Some nursing leaders can bring down the morale. No respect..and patients can be funny at times. Its so hard to satisfy them, despite all these there is always a reason to keep on, push it and give the best out to our patients. The society, hospital management, Government don't care about nurses physical, social, and emotional, wellbeing even our homes. ALL they want is for them to be satisfied at all times. Most time, during a shift its 1 nurse to 20 patients, and work must continue. who to blame? health is a must! AM glad and happy with what i do. I make sure i keep on a smilling face even under ctrical condition, patience with our client, an

RE: OGUN COLLEGE SUSPENDS LECTURER FOR IMPREGNATING NURSING STUDENT: PUNCH’S DELIBERATE MISINFORMATION AND MALICIOUS MISREPRESENTATION OF THE NOBLE PROFESSION OF NURSING by SHERIF OLANREWAJU

RE: OGUN COLLEGE SUSPENDS LECTURER FOR IMPREGNATING NURSING STUDENT: PUNCH’S DELIBERATE MISINFORMATION AND MALICIOUS MISREPRESENTATION OF THE NOBLE PROFESSION OF NURSING: WHAT SCORES DO SAMSON FOLARIN AND THE PUNCH NEWSPAPER HAVE TO SETTLE WITH THE NURSING PROFESSION? The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Ogun state chapter has once again observed with dismay the above titled publication by a supposedly renowned newspaper, The Punch newspaper, and we are disappointed that both the correspondents and editors of a news outfit of such repute will descend so low to propagate outright misinformation to the unsuspecting public with a deliberate attempt to smear the image of the noble profession of nursing. The Punch newspapers has at different times published stories wherein persons who are neither registered nurses nor student nurses have been mischievously referred to as either nurses or student nurses with the malevolent intention of defaming the good image of
