#HealthNews : Ebola Response Team Attacked in DRC
DRC -WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom was in Democratic Republic of Congo, to support the Ebola response team, together with the Centre for Disease Control Director, Dr Matshidiso Moeti and Dr Alma Golden from USAIDGH. They met with all the response partners and agreed that no one will relent until this outbreak is over.
In the same vein, Dr Tedros visited newly reopened Ebola treatment centre in Butembo, Democratic Republic of Congo. The centre was attacked again early morning of 9th March, 2019. Sadly a police officer died and staff injured. Dr Tedros met with staff from the centre, partners and local officials.
In his reaction, Dr Tedros said "It breaks my heart to think of the life we lost in this attack on the Ebola treatment centre, as we continue to mourn those who have died in previous attacks, while defending the right to health". He further reacted "Attacks on the Ebola treatment centre are not by the community, these are attacks on the community. We have no choice except to continue serving the people here, who are among the most vulnerable in the world".
He reiterated WHO stands on providing emergency care under whatever circumstances and shall be professionally neutral in its activities. "We requested and received further support from United Nation and local police forces to protect the Ebola treatment centres. We are trying to strike a balance between providing accessible care, maintaining the neutrality of the response, and protecting patients and staff".
Dr Tedros exhaled the response teams and partners for their selfless service. "We are at a pivotal moment in this #Ebola outbreak. All the partners will not relent until we put an end to this outbreak. We need to stay the course. This response is also a good example of partnership. I pay tribute & respect to all the partners."
