Antibiotic resistance: an extract of green tea to fight a superbug

Pseudomonas aeruginosaa multidrug-resistant bacterium responsible for many infections, especially in hospitals, has a new enemy: green tea. Laboratory research is showing the effectiveness of a natural tea leaf component in combating this pathogen, offering a new avenue for the development of ways to fight against antibiotic resistance.

Scientists from the University of Surrey (England) carried out laboratory tests and found that a natural component of green tea , combined with a commercially available antibiotic, could help combat antimicrobial resistance .
Research has focused on the combination of epigallocatechin (EGCG), a polyphenol extracted from green tea leaves , and aztreonam, an antibiotic commonly used to treat infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa . This bacterium is responsible for serious infections (even fatal) and resistant to many important classes of antibiotics .

Published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology , the study describes laboratory tests to determine how EGCG and aztreonam interact with  P. aeruginosa individually and in combination. The scientists found that the combination of aztreonam and EGCG was much more effective in reducing the number of  P. aeruginosa .
A series of tests was then performed on caterpillars , as well as in human skin cells. Here again, the survival rates were significantly higher in the subjects treated by combination of the two elements than in those treated with EGCG or aztreonam alone.

Improve the effectiveness of antibiotics

To explain this phenomenon, scientists assume that the action of EGCG could facilitate the increased absorption of aztreonam by increasing the permeability of bacteria. The researchers see the opportunity to provide a new track to overcome the health scourge that represents the resistance to antibiotics.
"There is an urgent need to develop new antibiotics in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. Natural products such as EGCG, used in combination with currently approved antibiotics may be a way to improve their efficiency and duration clinically useful life, " said Dr. Jonathan Betts, a researcher at the School of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Surrey and first author of the study.

  3. The scientific community now generally believes that Catechin in green tea has played a decisive role in weight loss. Catechin is the main constituent of tea polyphenols, accounting for 60% -80%. Tea polyphenols may not be unfamiliar to everyone. A certain brand of green tea beverages claims to contain a lot of tea polyphenols. In fact, it is the general term for polyphenols in green tea. Numerous trials have shown that the intake of catechins (270mg to 1200mg / day) does reduce body weight and fat.
